REVIEW // Plan B – Love Goes Down

Plan B returns again with the 5th single ‘Love Goes Down’ off his second album from earlier this year ‘The Defamation of Strickland Banks.Plan B has bagged the amazing award for Breakthrough Artist of the year by Q this year and had a sold out tour to match, singer Ben Drew is still one of the best around.

The album hit number one twice in the UK and with a 5th single it’s clearly a massive hit, here’s hoping there’s many more to come. There’s no worry of that with the new single ‘Love Goes Down.’ It’s delightfully soulful and gentle, especially in contrast with some of Plan B’s earlier records. It’s a nice wind-down song. It’s peaceful; it’s relaxing and perfect for this time of year. Yes it may be different and maybe we shouldn’t like it, but the vintage sounding, Motown-like track just seems to work. It’s different but I admire artists that experiment with their sound and adapt to new sounds.

Ben Drew even claimed he’s planning on giving the next album (due for release in 2011) away for free! He said, “I know ‘The Ballad of Belmarsh‘ is not going to work commercially, I know radio ain’t going to play it but I’m still going to put it out there because I love it. It’s a piece of art,” he said. “It’s probably going to sell about 100,000 copies – no more. But I’m cool with that.” However, I think this record has gone down a treat with fans and so will the next one. It may be different but it’s beautiful all the same.

The music video compliments the concept album following a story of a character named Strickland Banks played by Plan B. ‘Love Goes Down’ is a love song sung by Banks at a concert in the video which is presumably about his girlfriend. The 1960’s attire of the characters in the video, compliment Plan B’s new soulful sound and is like a trip back in time. ‘Love Goes Down’ shows another side to Ben Drew, his voice is full of emotion as he sings about a new love. It’s a work of art and builds a connection with his fans, he’s done himself proud with this one.

Plan B are continuing to tour next year and it’s sure to be another sell out success. ‘Love Goes Down’ is due for release Monday 6th December.
