POLICA // ‘Lay Your Cards Out’ Single Review

Polica’s deliciously funky ‘Lay Your Cards Out’ is a synth-laden, bass heavy ripper of a song. Its clever, understated, Ellie Goulding-esque sound immediately pierces the electro ether, commanding the listener’s ears. For 4 minutes and 5 seconds, Channy Casselle’s voice unravels tentatively to reveal a tender, pulsating heart beneath. Her voice transitions from petal delicate, to soulful R&B in one fell swoop. Contributing vocals from Bon Iver’s Mike Noyce combine with Casselle’s auto tuned flections to show the pristine production of the band’s first single.

Polica emerge from indie obscurity with keyboards, bass drums and tousled hair. But don’t be fooled. This is no vacuous, hipster fodder. This is a lucid high; achingly restrained and simmering with Minneapolitan sex.

As cool as Austra and as dark and dirty as a basement dance club, Polica’s single sets a massive precedent for their February released album: ‘Give You The Ghost’. It doesn’t hurt that Casselle is a total babe either.
