M83 Ft. Zola Jesus ‘Intro’ review

Recognise the name Anthony Gonzalez? Non? How about if we told you that the mastermind behing the cinematic musical workings of M83 was finally back on the scene after a three year hiatus since his last full-length ‘SATURDAYS=YOUTH”, bringing his ever celestial procedures back for our listening pleasure. Now do you feel more comfortable?

Gonzalez dropped the teaser video below simply entitled ‘Echoes…’ on his website last month

This followed the announcement of an ‘epic double album’, the video only reiterated what we know and love about this musician, plain and simple, as well as being seductively shot with scenes of architecture and analog, vintage instruments. Nothing new there then, until, the latest (and first track to be taken off the album ‘Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming’ entitled ‘Intro’) was leaked last month featuring breathtaking vocals from the magnificent Zola Jesus. It embarks on a five minute journey of prodigious proportions using this mistresses fragile whispering vocals set over repetative and somewhat unoriginal use of synths, all luring you into a false sense of security just before Gonzalez’s brave falsetto cuts through the musical workings like a freshly sharpened knife. The musicianship and vocal abilities apparent on the song amass up to stunning capacity as the juxtoposition between the harmonies and pitch presented by each artist shouldn’t work, but really does. What is brougt to life on ‘Into’ is dreamy, fragile and ever so slightly dark as we know both artists individually yet M83 and Zola Jesus, is certainly a match made in ethereal heaven.

Listen to the track here and ‘Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming‘ is realeased on 17th October.
