Whoever chucked Gotye must be holding their little heartbreaking self in shame, somewhere. He’s fucked off, big time. But he’s not getting his acoustic guitar out and belting out brooding, angsty tales of woe, from beneath his shaggy ‘do. No, no, he has created ‘Making Mirrors‘, his third studio album; a record that easily demonstrates the Belgium-born’s super talent for making infectious, layered beats. He defies genre, his influences ranging from pop and electro, to jazz and acid rock. He has a voice that is both raw and tender, as well as songs that refuse to conform to any tedious pattern. Instead, they show variation and fluctuation between influences and musical vision, to form a complete (though not overly-produced) record.
It was ‘Somebody That I Used To Know‘ that essentially launched Gotye‘s career into the metaphorical stratosphere. His frank, relatable lyrics of bitter, failed love, coupled with his intelligent, intricate patchwork of sounds, makes him comparable to artists such as Alex Clare, whose combination of soul and dubstep twinges your chest muscles as well as your leg muscles. Lily Allen loves him apparently, but we’ll ignore that…With a compelling, dog-dirty guitar riff, beats that will make you weak at the knees in the best of ways, and a quick-fire hook that will linger in your frontal lobes for a good week or so, Gotye‘s first release bodes very, very well for the success of the album.
So kiddas, you may well have the blues- but you might as well listen to some clever shit to get you through it. Download it when it comes out! November 28th.
