So, its that time of year again, the winter is looming and everyone seems to have the September back to work/school/uni blues, our recommendation to get over it? Leeds’s annual Brainwash Festival which returns for its sixth year at The Brudenell Social Club and Royal Park Cellars in Leeds this October. Here is our pick of the events best acts along with a few other enticing reasons to bag yourselves a ticket ASAP- at just £15 for a weekend ticket, we are not going to complain!
Castrovalva-
Without a doubt one of the best bands on the bill (coming from personal viewing experience, the last time i saw them live, Justin Beiber’s ‘Baby’ was played over the PA- but dont let that put you off), Castrovalva are described as ‘grime meets punk’ by many, as they certainly bring some new elements to the table by merging rapping with electro with some good old crowd interaction and moshing, a versatile rarity in music these days (plus they have Sylvester Stallone on a tee, HELLO, what’s not to love?). Catch them playing the upstairs Library on Friday.
Dananananaykroyd-
Our favourite Glaswegians with the ever un-pronounceable name are back in full force with their second album ‘There is a way’, forever bring their happy-clappy indie pop along with their now-famous ‘Wall of cuddles’ hopefully making a return, this 6 piece ‘fight pop’ group will be whipping up a frenzy at The Library on the Friday night also fresh from epic sets at Reading and Leeds Festivals this summer.
Kong-
Now, the weekend still not heavy enough for you yet? How about letting some brutal, thrashing sheer all-out modern day punk in the form of Kong scare the shit out of you (in the best possible way of course) on the Saturday at The Brudenell. With tracks such as ‘Blood of a dove’ including droaning vocals, their last live show i saw involved a LOT of nakedness, mandatory masks (they never perform without them) equipment trashing and audience members stage invading against security’s un-heared pleas- an inevitability at this event, although the lovely people at the Brude will be likely to join in themselves. Yorkshire, we salute you.
Tubelord-
Southerners’ Tubelord have been a favourite on the live scene for almost 5 years now, as their energetic, synth-filled indie kicks it up a notch with fast paced drums, fierce guitars and nostalgic, melodramatic lyrics ‘Sleeping away my life’ and ‘Turn your back ill do it now’ on fan favourite ‘Propeller’- don’t miss out as they play the Sunday of the event, a perfect excuse to be woken up and bought to your senses.
Blood Oranges-
Blood Oranges are a dreamy four-piece singing happy-go-lucky tracks about life, love and ‘just being friends’- hell, we doubt you’ve ever heared a track entitled ‘We killed them all’ with such a beautiful female vocal as unexpected. Sickly Sweet in the best possible way, catch them playing on the Sunday of the event, a no-doubt calming way to welcome in the hangover from the morning-after-the-night-before.
Lets Buy Happiness-
Lets Buy Happiness, the Newcastle-based five piece whose fan base includes the very respectful DJ Huw Stephens, showcase fruitful, throbbing drumbeats and calming, ethereal vocals. After working their way around the festival circuit this summer playing the likes of BBC Introducing, supporting Frankie & The Heartstrings on tour and a very special gig on a Ray Ban sponsored bus at Camden Crawl, catch Lets buy happiness in such a small vicinity before they blow up to epic proportions.
